National Weather Service in Nashville, TN Announces Major AWIPS Upgrade Coming Soon

NWS Nashville, TN will be conducting a required and scheduled update to their Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) on Monday Morning, May 19, 2025, through approximately Wednesday Evening, May 21, 2025. The NWS uses the AWIPS computer system to display and integrate weather and water information, and to send life-saving information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public.

During this downtime, forecast operations will be conducted by our service back-up office in NWS Knoxville/Morristown, TN. No impacts to our core services of forecast products and weather watches, warnings and advisories are expected during this period.

However, some impacts will occur to the following services:
• All NOAA Weather Radio transmitters maintained by NWS Nashville will be off the air through the entire time of the install. This includes the following transmitters in Middle Tennessee: Clarksville, Waverly, Nashville, Centerville, Lobelville, Clifton, Lawrenceburg, Hickman, LaFayette, Cookeville, and Spencer.
• Local graphical forecast, climate, and probabilistic maps that are hosted in numerous places on weather.gov/Nashville will not be updated. This includes all maps on the Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook and Probabilistic DSS webpages.

NWS Nashville, TN will remain open and staffed 24/7 throughout this upgrade period for public and partner phone calls and additional functions that can be completed without AWIPS.

If there are any further questions, please contact NWS Nashville’s Meteorologist-in-Charge Krissy Hurley at Krissy.Hurley@noaa.gov.
